Abstract: It is well-known that according to Einstein's general theory of relativity, nothing can move faster than the speed of light. However, it turns out that this theory also has several "loopholes", which may - at least in theory - allow an object to get to its destination before any light beam gets there, while still being perfectly consistent with all known physics. In this lecture I will discuss my research into some of these loopholes, such as wormholes, warp drives, and hyperspace. I will also talk about potential consequences for space travel in the very far future, and the possibility that faster-than-light travel may lead to time travel.

Biography:

"I am a theoretical, mathematical, and computational physicist. I work as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Brock University, where I recently won the FMS Award for Excellence in Teaching. I am also a Sessional Lecturer at McMaster University. My research focuses on the nature of time and causality in general relativity and quantum mechanics, as well as symbolic and high-performance scientific computing. In my spare time I am also a multi-instrumentalist and composer."

Series Info:

This dynamic series showcases groundbreaking research across various scientific disciplines, all leveraging the unparalleled speed and precision of light-based techniques.

Leap into the latest advancements, from quantum mechanics to medical imaging, and discover how these innovations are revolutionizing our understanding of the universe. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with the brightest minds in the field and witness science moving at the speed of light.

All are welcome to attend, with a focus on undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. We welcome members of the Brock community as well as the wider Niagara region to attend for free.
